RFYC 40th Anniversary Weekend & Open Day – 4th/5th June

The weekend of 4th/5th June saw the Royal Findhorn Yacht Club celebrating the 40th year since they became a Royal club, with a one day Regatta on the Saturday and an Open Day on the Sunday.

Racing took place on Saturday in the Moray Firth with 17 dinghies and 1 cruiser sailing 2 races. Winds were light but steady and good sailing was enjoyed by all. The overall winner of the Findhorn Yacht Club Cup was National 18 339, helmed by Stuart Urquhart, with Richard Urquhart and James Gibb crewing. First in the Fast H’Cap was RS400 739 , helmed by Phil Hermiston, with Josh Cruden crewing. First in the Slow H’Cap was Calumn Ashcroft in Laser Radial 188823. Special mention for best junior went to Ben Cowie, crewing for his Mother in a Mirror. Best novice went to Finlay Laing for sailing a Topper in the Firth on his own. The most spectacular capsize was unanimously awarded to Roy Cowie, who proved that you can’t send a very large man up a National 18 mast chasing the spinnaker halyard!

Sunday saw Open Day with 2 races in Findhorn Bay.  The winner of the Open Day trophy was William McTurk in Phantom 1106. There were try a sail sessions all day which were very well attended and the RFYC Clubhouse was open to visitors. The annual Findhorn RNLI Day was also taking place so the foreshore was busy with lots of visitors.
